How to remove stains from bedding, sheets and pillows

The rule for every stain: act quickly, use cool water, blot rather than rub, and test on a hidden corner first.

The short answer

Blot the stain immediately with a clean cloth, rinse from the back with cool water, then work in a little diluted mild detergent and let it sit before washing as usual.

Never use hot water or the dryer until the stain is gone, heat sets protein and oil stains permanently.

The basic method

Use this for any fresh stain before reaching for anything stronger.

  • 1.Blot the stain with a clean white cloth to lift what you can, do not rub
  • 2.Rinse from the back of the fabric with cool water to push the stain out the way it came in
  • 3.Apply a little mild liquid detergent diluted in cool water and work it in gently
  • 4.Leave it for 15 to 30 minutes
  • 5.Rinse and check; repeat if needed
  • 6.Wash as normal, and air dry the spot to confirm it is gone before tumble drying

By type of stain

Always test on a hidden area first.

StainWhat works
Sweat and body oil (yellowing)Pre-soak in cool water with mild detergent and an oxygen-based whitener, then wash
Makeup and skincareDab with a small amount of dish soap to break the oil, then rinse cool
Coffee and teaRinse cool immediately, then mild detergent; oxygen whitener for older marks
Red wineBlot, flush with cool water, then mild detergent; never hot water
BloodCold water only, then mild detergent; heat sets it

Stains on down comforters and pillows

Spot clean only the shell: push the fill away from the stained area, hold the fabric taut, and treat just the shell with a damp cloth and diluted mild detergent. Rinse with a clean damp cloth and let it dry completely, fluffing the fill back in. Avoid soaking the down itself unless you are washing the whole piece.

Common questions

Answered plainly

How do you get stains out of a down comforter without washing it?
Push the down away from the stain, treat only the shell fabric with a cloth and diluted mild detergent, rinse with a damp cloth, and let it air dry completely before fluffing the fill back.
Can I use bleach on white sheets?
We advise against chlorine bleach, it weakens cotton and causes yellowing over time. An oxygen-based whitener is gentler and effective.
Why should I avoid hot water on stains?
Heat bonds protein stains like blood and sweat, and oil stains, to the fibre so they become permanent.
