How to choose a comforter warmth level

Warmth in a comforter is decided twice: by how much down is inside it, and by the room it sleeps in. Choose the warmth level for your bedroom and your body, not the calendar.

The short answer

Choose All Year Weight unless you know your room runs hot or cold. Summer Weight suits warm rooms, warm sleepers and anyone who layers a blanket on top. Winter Weight suits genuinely cold rooms, open windows and people who are always cold.

Fill power changes how heavy that warmth feels, not how warm it is. A 920 All Year comforter is lighter than a 560 All Year comforter, it is not a warmer one.

The three warmth weights

Every one of our down comforter lines is made in the same three warmth weights. The shell, the fill and the construction are identical, only the ounces of down inside change.

Match the weight to the room, not the season

A comforter lives in one room. A Winter Weight in a bedroom held at 68 degrees will spend the summer folded at the foot of the bed, and an All Year Weight in a room that sits near 60 all winter will get pulled off by 3 a.m.

Ask what the room actually is: how warm the thermostat holds it, whether a window stays cracked, whether it sits over an unheated space. That answer picks the weight more reliably than the month.

  • Thermostat near 65 to 70 year round: All Year Weight
  • Warm room or a hot sleeper: Summer Weight
  • Cold room, open window, or a permanently cold sleeper: Winter Weight

What the ounces actually look like

The warmth weights differ by fill weight, and fill weight scales with the size of the comforter. A queen-size BERNINA 650 carries roughly 24 ounces of down in Summer Weight, 34 ounces All Year and 46 ounces in Winter, the same shell, three very different beds.

Fill power changes how those ounces feel. The same All Year warmth in a 920 fill power line arrives in noticeably less fill than in a 560, which is why our highest fill power comforters are also our lightest.

Two sleepers, one comforter

When one of you runs hot and the other is always cold, an All Year Weight is the usual compromise. Many couples find the better answer is to size up one step, the extra drape lets the warmer sleeper keep a foot out without stealing the whole comforter.

If the gap is genuinely large, tell us. We will walk through the room, the thermostat and each sleeper's habits before naming a weight, which is faster and more honest than any chart.

If you sleep hot

Sleeping hot is usually a room and layering problem, not a comforter problem, but the comforter can stop fighting you. Choose Summer Weight, keep the shell cotton rather than synthetic where you can, and add a blanket you can throw off at 2 a.m. instead of buying warmth you will push away.

A down alternative comforter is a reasonable second piece for hot nights and for guest rooms: it breathes, drapes like down, and washes at home without ceremony.

Common questions

Answered plainly

What warmth comforter should I buy?
All Year Weight suits most bedrooms. Pick Summer Weight for warm rooms or hot sleepers, and Winter Weight only for genuinely cold rooms or a sleeper who is always cold.
Is a higher fill power comforter warmer?
No. Fill power describes how much loft an ounce of down produces, so a higher number reaches the same warmth with less weight. Warmth comes from the weight you choose, not the number on the label.
What is the difference between Summer and All Year weight?
Only the amount of down inside. A queen BERNINA 650 carries roughly 24 ounces in Summer Weight against 34 ounces All Year, same shell, same construction, about 10 ounces less down.
Can one comforter work all year?
Yes, that is exactly what All Year Weight is made for. In a bedroom held at a normal temperature it works without a top sheet in August and under a blanket in February.
